Martin Kaltwasser working on his mission to "turn cars into bicyles".
Kill your car before it kills you.In summer 2009 I took part in Martin Kaltwasser´s and Folke Köbberling´s performance "Produktionsstrasse" (assembly line) at the Kampnagel Summer Festival 2009. The idea behind the perfomance was to turn cars into bicyles and made it an open declaration of war on personal motor vehicles as well as an ironic commentary on the newly introduced car scrap bonus (in Germany you were given 2500€ for wrecking your car and buying a new one at that time).
To tackle the enormous amount of material the car provided we were asked to join the performance and help turning the car into more useful things. During the two weeks lasting performance we disassembled the car completely and produced a great range of objects, including two bicyles, tables, lamps, a rocking horse, chairs, a chess game, bags, bowls and much more.
An upholstered chair built from neck-rests and window frames.
The seat´s width can be adjusted by pulling or pushing the neck-rests apart or together.
This chair is built from the spare tyre´s bay, a shock absorber´s spring and some rubber parts.
The spring functions as suspension and adds some flexibility to the chair.
All mirrors that could be found on the car are put together to create the "narcissist´s mirror".
Instead of seeing your whole face in one single mirror you will see different fractions of youself in varying sizes and perspectives.
